Mavado – Gansta and Gully

Mavado has been on my concert bucket list for a while now. Ever since the Jamaican born singer appeared on the 2004 Anger Management riddim, Mr. Brooks has been on a roll to success.

After Beenie Man, Elephant Man or Vybz Kartel ,  Mavado has now become one of the most successful international faces of Jamaica. In 2011, the artist was  approached by Miami king DJ Khaled and announced he was signed to his record label, We Are The Best Music Group.

Since then, Mavado has collaborated with several artists such as Drake, Akon, Ace Hood, Snoop Dogg, G Unit and Nicki Minaj.

You don’t want to miss Mavado’s first ever performance in Montreal. I heard he will be performing with a live band!

Jordan and Heels Affair (Pictures)

It was a  fun and casual night last Friday July 10th at Le Loft in downtown Montreal. The  first edition of the Jordan and Heels Affair, hosted by dancer PhoPho and MF Productions was a great to kick off the weekend.

Guest partied the night away thanks to Chiefy Don from Talent Squad, Dwayne Buckley, Big Worm and Dj Future Milli. Well known Jamaican dancer/choreographer Stacia ”FYA” Edwards also joined the celebration.

Check out the pictures below.

Drake sings for THOTs and Dipset finally releases music

Image

Happy Friday everyone !

What a great way to celebrate this long and awaited weekend with some good hip hop music.

This week, Drake released Thotful , wich you could call an anthem for all the THOTs around the world. How thoughtful of him. This beat produced by Dj Mustard (very on demand right now) features rap newcomer OB O’Brien. He’s a mix between Tyga and Ty Dolla $ign.

Listen to Thothful:

As for Dipset, well they are back finally! After releasing some music in the past year individually, I think a reunion was about danm time.

Although Jim Jones is not on this new release, (produced by montrealer A-Trak by the way) you can still listen to your two other favourites, Cam’ron and Juelz Santana.

Bun B- Performing live at Cabaret Underworld (May 6th 2014)

04A78433-DE07-ADAC-01C5736AF074B78C

The first time I saw UGK on tv was when Jay Z’s ”Big Pimpin” first played on Musique Plus. Even though Bun and the late Pimp C released their first independent album in 1988, it is fair to say that being in a Jay Z video gave these two southern gentlemen a great exposure who would eventually make them popular in the East Coast. Even after the tragic death of his longtime partner in crime in 2007, the big bearded man still continued to do music. Having collaborated with big shots like Jeezy, Rick Ross or Gucci Mane, Bun B clearly has nothing to prove to all you suckas. That’s what he would say.

Since 2005, he released the ”Trill” compilations which could be a short term for too real. his last effort, Trill O.G. has had a great success over North America and has helped the rapper put Texas back on the map after the ”Chamillionaire, Mike Jones and Paul Wall early 2000s era.

If you are not busy tonight, come see this southern legend at Cabaret Underworld. It is rare in Montreal to see a southern rapper grace the stage. So twenty-five dollars is a pretty cheap price to see such an influential rapper.

Quick Info

Who: Bun B, well known member of Texas rap group UGK (also performing ThugLi,Montrilla and Grandbuda)

When: Tuesday May 6th around 9pm

Where: Cabaret Underworld (1403, Saint-Elisabeth Street near Sainte-Catherine E)

How Much: around 20$ to 25$ (Tix available at Off the Hook, Moog, Empire or at Cabaret Underworld)

You should attend if: You want to take a break from the East coast music a little bit. If you know how to keep it TRILL.

See you there !

Childish Gambino, March 26th @ Metropolis, Montreal

He’s real name is Donald Glover but he goes by the name of Childish Gambino when he raps. He’s not only a musician, he’s a comedian and an actor. His first movie was even directed by Drew Barrymore. For tonight though, we’ll just focus on his music abilities. The doors open at 8:00pm and the tickets are a slightly over 35$. If it’s too early for you and you’re on a budget, Cabaret Underworld will be holding an after party for Gambino. It’s 10$ and Montreal’s DJ Shash’u will be mixing.

Kanye West Concert review (Bell Center, Feb. 17th 2014)

 * Il·lu·mi·nate
1. To provide or brighten with light.
2. To decorate or hang with lights.
3. To make understandable; clarify
4. To enlighten intellectually or spiritually; enable to understand.
5. To endow with fame or splendor; celebrate.
6. To adorn (a page of a book, for example) with ornamental designs, miniatures, or lettering in brilliant colors or precious metals.
A mess. Too long. Church ceremony. Theatrical. Exaggerate like his ego. This pretty much sums up Kanye West’s performance of last night at the Bell Center. Some will say that it was pure genius (with Sideshow Mel’s voice).
The eight thousands of fans who attended yesterday can agree that the decor was a visual delight. A high mountain (which reminded me of the old 10 commandments movie) was placed at the back of the stage. In front, Kanye chose a triangular stage who was lifted and transformed into a cliff. Dramatic touch.
It was nice to get such an interesting decor compared to the none existing ones you’re used to seeing in rap concerts. It somewhat reminded me of the spaceship he brought us a few years ago for the Glow in the Dark Tour.
As for the theatrical aspect, it looked like a Broadway music play about the story of Jesus. None only that the Christ was ”there” but a few nones too. Let’s also not forget the ladies all dressed in nude onesies who lifted the rapper in the air while performing ”I am a God’. Yeah, that’s Kanye for you.
Kanye was definitely on time. As promised, around 8:00pm, the Chicagoan took the stage to perform the latest hits from his last effort, Yeezus. The first part of the show was not as welcoming for the fans than it was when Jay  Z came last month. West was not connecting with fans and sounded alone on his mountain. He even laid on the top of the cliff, pouring his heart out, signing Coldest Winter (808 & Heartbreak,2008) with snow coming down on him. Emo Kanye. He also wore a mask for the first hour. Annoying for some, true fashion  sense for others.
A few memorable moments of the show was the creepy-red-eye-monster (some say devil) walking slowly across the mountain.  When Blood on the Leaves came, the hill transformed into a red hot volcano who, with the impressive lightning effects exploded loudly and almost made me lose my eyesight.
In the second act, we kinda sorta got our old Kanye back. Performing Through the Wire, All Falls Down and Get em high really made me reminisce the mornings I used to wake up to that College Dropout playlist. Oh yes, Kanye also took about 20 minutes to talk about why he was doing/acting like what he was and that he is part of the great ones, like Walt Disney or Steve Jobs. It was a positive message, indeed. Just a bit long Kanye.
Now, a lot of people say that Kanye West is just another member of that ”not-very-secret society”. We should just embrace the creativity, even if it means using Christianity. Now let Jesus walk with you.

Kanye finally removed his mask later on.

Happy to attend Yeezus show. Forever21 tank top.

Happy to attend Yeezus show. Forever21 tank top.

THE M.U.L.A. GRADE: 9/10. Besides the sound behind a bit tooo loud at times, or the 20 minute rant this show deserves a perfect score. Kanye is by far one of the greatest artist of our generation. He knows that already.

The Champion

Were you one of the many who watched the anticipated fight between Lucian Bute and Jean Pascal last Saturday? If you haven’t checked your Facebook timeline yet, Pascal won easily the match and crushed the last hope of soon to be retired Bute, of winning his title back.

Like many fellow Haitians, I was rooting for Pascal. Deep down, though , I wanted Bute to win. Everyone loves a good comeback. But last night wasn’t.

I think we can all agree that it was not the best HBO fight, yet it wasn’t the worst. Pascal threw a few punches (kept a good pace too) and had everybody cheering when he sent Bute to the ground. The Romania native only started waking up at the 12th round. Too little, too late.

Nonetheless, Jean Pascal is undeniably a great boxer. Surely, his bragging can be annoying at times. But why not? We need our Canadian version of Mayweather and so far, he fits the glove perfectly.

Wish you the best Jean. Make your country or city proud.

How about you? Who were you rooting for? Share your thoughts on the boxing match !

For those who missed the match, here are the highlights of the night !
