Last weekend, the people behind Souche magazine had a mission to bring Montrealers for the first time at the Palais des Congres. Was it mission accomplished for the organisation team? I would have to say somewhat. On one hand, local designers, makeup artists and performers had the chance to showcase their talents or business to visitors. It was nice to see how each and everyone one presented and explained the their products. One crucial thing I would suggest to these entrepreneurs is to be more active on the social media. How can we test, buy what your are selling if we have no idea where to find it? By introducing your hair products or your latest natural lip balm on the internet, you have a bigger chance to reach potential buyers.
The only deplorable thing about the festival was the lack of organisation. Some of the performances did not look prepared and a few volunteers would have definitely been welcomed! There’s a first time for everything thought. Who knows, if it would have been different if more people attended the festivities. Overall, some part of the activities did not look professional. Even if Souche Festival could have been reduced into a one day celebration, it was still an entertaining weekend and the festival shed light to amazing businesses and artists who needed an extra help.
With these minor changes, I am confident that Souche Festival will attract more visitors and more talents. After all, it is time for us young Montrealers to start our own economy. See you next year Souche!

While some collections like French Couture Box and Indra Libong played a lot with color, some designers decided to play it safe. Fashion pioneers Ralph Leroy and Adama Paris both presented an all white collection. Nonetheless, both designers showed us sumptuous (and detailed) dresses and some very fashionable two-pieces.

RALPH LEROY
It’s under a traditional chant that the Haitian designer opened the second night ceremony. It seemed like Leroy wanted to bring a bit of his roots on the runway. Looking at the models dressed in white felt like a holy ceremony held in the hot streets of Port-au-Prince.Some of the models even strolled the catwalk barefoot.We loved the mixture of texture in the asymmetrical two piece suits and the dramatic touch added to the puffy white gown.
SWEET SECRET
It’s not a secret no more, designer Annélia (or Eshe) knows how to create a fierce collection. The choice of hot colours (orange, turquoise and red) were so refreshing and reminded us how summer is right on the corner. Her feisty orange leather jumpsuit even received a warm round of applause from the female audience.
Some of the garnements had the elegance and the softness of the kimono, a Japanese traditional garment.
SACHIKA
Fierceness! The Sachika twins kept it fun and playful with little black dresses and the creamy sequin dresses. We loved the glittery cat mask. Fierceness!
FRENCH COUTURE BOX
Intensity, patterns and sleek dresses.The French Couture line was a fun mix of Paris and Ivory Coast bold colours. The designer kept it cheek until the very end with a stunning long sleeve wedding gown.
MARTIAL TAPOLO
The catwalk became a beautiful scenery and gave us of an old Hollywood vibe. You just had to be there to see this.
Oh…I think the birdcage hats are making a comeback!
ADAMA PARIS
The night ended the same way it started,in an all white collection. The models arrived on stage, with their faces covered by a white sheet. It was ironic to see the models looking like nuns while the audience looked like churchgoers. Sure, the senegalese designer kept it more simple this year but within her feminine character style.

May’s fashion frenzy is officially done. The third edition of the Black Fashion Week in Montreal finally kicked off last weekend. Same bat place, same bat time.
The two day event welcomed hundreds of guests inside the beautiful Saint-Jean-Baptiste church in the Mont-Royal Plateau.
The first night welcomed designers Dede Reelia, Kine Dione, Dominique Ouzilleau, Vala Bella and Indra Libong. As the tradition goes, fashion veteran (and camera shy) Helmer closed the celebration with a theatrical performance.

DOMINIQUE OUZILLEAU

Being able to dress women with elegance and style has always been Valdine Behenka’s dream. For her first time at the BFW, the designer presented romantic dramatic dress, red carpet worthy. Vala Bella was one of the few designers who presented wedding gowns.
KINE DIONE
Que bella! You could easily feel the Italian inspiration throughout Dione’s collection. We loved the classy suit for the modern business woman. Kine Dione also had fun with texture and feathers with her eccentric dresses.
INDRA LIBONG
The Belgium designer and stylist was also a newbie to the Black Fashion Week. Libong’s main purpose has always been to create stylish and timeless garments for women. You could say she hit the mark! The designer added beautiful details in the back of her dress, giving them an edgy look.
UNIQUE BY REELIA
You cannot complete an outfit without some killer accessories! Dede Reelia’s pieces were big, round and screamed Africa all over them. We loved how the models were dressed in a simple white dress which helped showcase the funky neck pieces.

HELMER
The Haitian designer did it again. From the dramatic opera music to the baroque inspiration.The couturier gave us an amalgam of flower patterns, tulle and sequins. And yes, it worked perfectly.
Less is more. This year, the designer decided to present only a few pieces.
C’est le 30 et 31 mai dernier que ce rendez-vous très attendu et haut en couleur a eu lieu à Montréal. Un an après la première édition, on a senti qu’Adama, créatrice du BFW était de retour avec force et prête à relever le défi une deuxième fois dans sa ville d’accueil. Mission accomplie.
It’s on May 30th and 31st that the much anticipated rendez-vous was held in Montreal. A year later, we felt that Adama, creator of the BFW was ready for a strong comeback and was up for another challenge. Mission accomplished.
L’événement festif a débuter par l’apparition de diverses personnalités québécoises dont l’animateur Angelo Cadet et la DJ Sandy Duperval. The event started with a few guest appearances like host Angelo Cadet or Dj Sandy Duperval.
Il nous a pas autant surpris qu’à la première édition mais on a été tout aussi ravie. Dès l’ouverture du bal, on a su rapidement que l’élégance serait aux rendez-vous. On reconnait que ses tenues étaient souvent chargées visuellement. Avec Helmer par contre, ce n’est jamais une mauvaise chose. Au contraire, c’était un pur délice de pouvoir admirer tout les détails de broderie (surement fait à la main) d’un de ses corsets, sur le bord d’un robe ou même jusqu’à la chaussure du mannequin.
Maybe Helmer didm not surprise us like the first BFW but we were just as pleased to see him again. We could have know that elegance would be present along the show. Although Helmer likes to offer us pieces who keeps our eyes busy, it doesn’t mean it is a bad thing. On the contrary, it was a pure delight do watch all thise embroidery on the corsets, on a dress or even on a shoe. He still did not lose his touch after 20 years.
Je suis un peu dingue du noir donc mon opinion sera peut-être biaisé. On a bien apprécié la simplicité de cette ligne prête à porter montréalaise. La designer ne réinvente pas la roue mais la petite robe noire restera toujours un incontournable pour toutes les fashionistas de la planète. Avis au intéressées, vous pouvez vous procurer sa collection passe-partout sur le boulevard Saint-Laurent à Montréal.
I’m crazy about black so my opinion might be biased. Nonetheless, we loved the simplicity of this ready to wear collection. Joanne, the Quebecer designer doesn’t reinvent the wheel but the little black dress remains an eternal classic for every fashionistas around the world. Mind you, her clothing store is located on Saint-Laurent Blvd in Montreal.

J’avais très hâte de voir la collection de Mlle Étienne, surtout avec le grand enthousiasme que la designer dégageait le jour plus tôt. Quelle belle surprise! La créativité et la détermination que la jeune relationniste détient est certainement à envier de ses pairs. On aurait dit que tout les sacs à main étaient méticuleusement agencés avec les jolies tenues aux motifs africains. Sous une ambiance de Zouk/Kompa, on enviait un peu les mannequins, qui semblait se pavaner sous le soleil chaud des tropiques. Les sacs, dont la plupart sont de grande taille nous rappellent des toiles de peintres haitiens.Gare à vous, grand détaillants de sac à mains, la collection Tmel risque de vous donnez du fil à retorde prochainement.
I was eager to see Miss Etienne’s collection, seeing how excited she looked the day before. Again, I was happily surprised. A lot of her peers would certainly envy her drive and creativity. It looked that all of her handbags were carefully put together with some african print clothes. With Zouk/Kompa music in the background, it looked like the models were strolling under the tropical sun.Most of her (oversize) handbags reminded us of haitian artwork. Careful, you handbags providers, Tmel collections might be competition sooner than you think.

Les 2 designers ont nommé leur ligne Cocody, une ville de Côte d’ivoire, qui comme leur pièce, reflète la chaleur et l’exotisme// The designers decide to name their clothing line Cocody, a city located in Ivory Coast. Their clothes represents the sun and exoticism, just like its town.
LADY R CREATION
Jeune, sophistiquée et pleine de vie. Cette ligne de vêtements ressemble tout à fait a sa créatrice. Contrairement à ce qu’on a vu plus haut, la designer a employé tout sauf du noir pour sa ligne de vêtements.Le coup de coeur des fashionistas: l’ensemble une pièce deux tons de couleur mauve. Très élégant. La designer et ex-mannequin confectionne la plupart de ses vêtements et accessoires à l’aide de sacs de canne à sucre qu’on retrouve dans son pays natal, Haiti. Qu’est-ce qui lui importe le plus, sauf de créer des pièces ultra-féminines? Pouvoir les offrir tout les types de femmes (grande, petite, ronde, mince, blonde ou brunette). Il semble que rien ne puisse l’arrêter.
Young, sophisticated and full of life. A clothing line that is exactly like its creator. As opposed to her fellow colleagues, Lady did not show us any sign of the color black. Our favorite piece: the purple jumper. Very elegant. Fun fact, the young designer and ex-model designs most of her clothes and accessories with the help of bags who are used to carry sugar canes. Don’t expect to find any of these here, as she finds this creative ”fabric” in her native land, Haiti. When asked what was more important to her other than creating ultra-girlie pieces ? Being able to provide them to all types of women (tall, short, skinny, big boned, blonde or brunette). Seems that nothing can or will stop her.

MIRMONDE PHILDOR
Après avoir été absente de la scène de la mode pendant deux ans, il était temps pour Phildor de retourner à sa réel passion.Après avoir reçu quelques coups de fils de son ami Helmer, la designer a su nous présenter de magnifiques pièces à son image, c’est-à-dire avec une douceur et une élégance irréparable. Elle nous promet de revenir dans 6 mois.
After a 2 year hiatus, it was time for Phildor to return to her main passion. After receiving a pep talk from her good friend Helmer, the designer presented us beautiful garnements who were soft and elegant, just like her. She promised she would be back in 6 months.

La designer nous a confié que cette pièce avait crée seulement quelques jours avant le défilé. Bon boulot Mirmonde ! The designer told us that this dress was only ready a few days before the show. Mirmonde did a great job !

Oscar Mendoza Sensuel et délicat/ Sensual and Delicate.
Oscar Mendoza a la conférence de presse. Selon lui, il faut continuer à travailler plus fort afin que ce genre d’événement soit davantage subventionné par le gouvernent. Oscar Mendoza, during the press conference. The designer reminded everyone how it was important to work harder in order to receive a government subsidy for these type of events.

Nous ne sommes pas surprise d’apprendre que Mr. Chenail a une formation en architecture. On a adoré les coupes féminines réfléchies, l’utilisation du blanc et noir et surtout les sacs à main aux formes géométriques.
We’re not too surprised to know that Chenail first started a career as an architect. We loved the well thought feminine cuts, the use of black and white and the funky geometrical handbags.

ETNIKA
On a également eu le béguin pour la très rafraichissante collection d’Etnika, surtout quand on sait qu’elles utilisent des tissus recyclés pour ses accessoires. Mieux encore, la plupart de ses créations sont conçues ici même, au Québec.
Etnika also holds a special place in our heart, especially when we heard that most of her designed pieces are made out of recycled fabrics. She even creates her eco friendly clothes right here in Quebec.

Une pièce de Youd / A Youd création
On a senti l’inspiration du film Mad Max derrière la collection d’accessoires qui a du mordant. La dernière pièce nous a aussi rappeler l’audacité d’une certaine rappeuse dans les début 2000. Youd fait définitivement partie d’une génération féroce.
We felt the ”Mad Max” inspiration behind You’d’s body jewels collection. The last piece sure reminded me of a certain ”ballsy” female rapper circa 2000. Proud member of the fierce generation.
Mitra Ghavamian
Mitra Ghavamian nous avait prévenue. Il fallait s’attendre à quelque chose qu’on aurait pas vu ailleurs. Malgré certains grattement de tête de la part de la foule, on salue l’audace de la designer. Les longs bras surdimensionnés traversant le dos ou encore les multiples mains posées sur le ventre du mannequin nous ont rappelés l’univers sombre du mouvement expressionniste au début du 20e siècle. On a aussi aimé le contraste entre la couleur des pièces (blanc, beige ornées de perles) avec la musique un peu effrayante (opéra rencontre la bande sonore de Psychose). Merveilleux.
Mitra Ghavamian warned us. We had to expect the unexpected. Although some of the crowd were scratching their heads, we must command the designer’s guts. The over dimensioned arms or many hands gently resting on the model’s lower chest reminded us of the expressionism art movement in the 20th century. There was also a contrast with the softness of the clothing (white, beige garnished with pearls) and the creepy background music (Opera meets Psycho theme song). Marvellous.

Adama Paris, qui a ouvert le bal en deuxième journée a su créer un parfait mélange de féminité (tutu de ballerine) et du garçon (chemise bucheron mais ajusté).
Seems like Adama, who opened the val on day 2 was able to create the perfect blend between feminity (ballerina tulle) and masculinity (fitted plaid shirt).

Même si le chaos de la première édition me manquait cette année, j’étais fière des petits mais tout aussi important changements apportés à l’événement. Comme Ndiaye et Leroy ont mentionné, il est important pour tout le monde (et pas juste pour nous les Noirs) de s’entraider. Tout simplement.Il ne s’agit pas seulement de s’acheter vêtements et sacoches, il faut se supporter mentalement. Se donner une tape derrière l’épaule de temps en temps. Se donner des conseils. Si nous travaillons tous ensemble, imaginez toutes les barrières que les minorités pourrions briser dans le milieu cruel qu’est la mode ou dans bien d’autres. J’espère bien revoir le Black Fashion Week encore plus grand et meilleur dans les dix prochaines années. Mais cela dépend de nous.
Even though I miss the crazy chaos of the first BFW edition, I’m proud of the small but noticeable changes that were done this year. It seems like there is a more mature feel around the event which is probably what they needed anyway. Like Ndiaye and Leroy said, it is important for everyone, not just amongst us black folks, to support each other . It’s not only about buying each other’s clothes or handbags, it’s about supporting each other mentally. Meaning we need to give each other a pad a back every once in while. If we all work together, imagine what barriers us minorities could break in the world of fashion or in any other field. I hope to see the Black Fashion Week even bigger and better for the next 10 years. Then again it all depends on us.
I’ve been feeling a bit melancholic for the past few days. You see around this time of the year, I’m usually frolicking on the beautiful beach of South Miami with my girlfriends chugging Mexican Bulldogs on the city’s animated strip. Memorial Day Weekend anyone ?

This week will be the second edition of Black Fashion Week in Montreal. I’m excited but not too surprised about the event coming back for another round. Last year, thousands of fashionistas and members of the medias were reunited for this three day event. Founded by Senegalese designer Adama Ndiaye, this fashion celebration has been embraced across the globe, from Bresil , to Paris and even Prague. Montreal could not have been a better addition.
Cette semaine aura lieu la deuxième édition du Black Fashion Week à Montréal. Je ne suis pas du tout surprise du retour de cet événement. L’année dernière, des milliers de fashionistas et membres des médias étaient réunis pour ces trois jours de festivités. Fondée par la designer sénégalaise Adama Ndiaye, cette célébration de la mode noire a été accueillie dans plusieurs coins du monde comme au Brésil, Paris et même à Prague. Et maintenant Montréal, choix judicieux.

This year, Adama has chosen Ralph Leroy as the event Ambassador. This Haitian-born Montreal designer has been on a roll for a few years now. If celebrities like Will Smith or Oprah are not talking about him, then his creations are gracing the pages of Vogue UK magazine. You can also expect to see another fellow Caribbean designer, well-known Joseph Helmer. Being in the high fashion industry for two decades hasn’t changed him at all. We can’t wait to see what he’ll have in store for us this second time.

Vous aurez aussi la chance de voir un autre créateur antillais, Joseph Helmer. Même s’il a maintenant vingt ans d’expérience dans le monde de la haute couture, le succès ne semble pas lui avoir monter à la tête. On a bien hâte de voir ce qu’il nous réserve cette année.

A part of me misses the old Kanye in those Slum village days or when he was just creating hits for the Roc-a-Fella rooster (RIP to Memphis Bleek, Freeway, Peedi Crack and Young Gunz’s rap careers).
On the other side, it’s good to see a producer, turned rapper, turned high fashion designer. He came a long way from laughing at boogie girls in College Dropout to raise social awareness in ”New Slaves”.Kanye West sure evolved as a musician.
Just in time to celebrate the 10 year anniversary his College Dropout album (already), Kanye West will pay us a visit tomorrow night at the Bell Center for his Yeezus Tour. He might complain, laugh, rant or just scream tomorrow night. That’s the Kanye we love,though.
