Man of the Year (Upcoming Concert)

I was trying to understand what all the hype was about several months ago, when I heard Man of The Year from Germany-born rapper Schoolboy Q. So when I asked a friend why this guy was so popular, he suggested me to listen to his previous work before branding him as another annoying-rapper-for-hipsters category. So I listened to his 2009 storytelling mixtape, Gangsta & Soul. Then I listened to Oxymoron. And then I understood.

The critically acclaimed Oxymoron LP, was released under Top Dawg Ent. and Dr. Dre’s Interscope records. The album featured big names like Raekwon, Tyler The Creator and Kendrick Lamar. Released in 2013, the album sold less 200K album on it’s first week. Q later admitted he would have preferred staying independent.

Schoolboy is a 27 years old ex California Crip gang member who only emerged on the North American music scene a few years ago. Last year, the rapper  graced the cover of the XXL magazine for their annual Freshmen edition.

Schoolboy Q’s laid back L.A. flow and  sometimes sexual wordplay might persuade you to stop at The Olympia this Saturday. Who knows, you will probably change your mind about the kid like I did.

YG…the Real G (Concert Review)

Montreal got a taste from the West Coast on July 24th at the Arena nightclub. Before the C Bompton rapper hit the stage, the enthusiastic (but small) crowd heard some of the city’s rap talents.
If you’re from the East part of Montreal, you’ve probably heard about the rap group Cdx/45 Starz. Although most of us know them for their ”local” hit  Fais pas ton niaiseux, the quatuor decided to play a few tracks in english. It was good seeing them perform.

Blockmode

The audience also enjoyed other performances like Uptown rapper Nyce and the group Blockmode . If their faces sounded familiar, then you probably saw them opening the Bun B show a few months ago. Blockmode’s energy on stage is pretty commendable, but the performance looked  and sounded a bit messy at times. It’s hard to understand when fifty rappers try to sing at the same time. The Jay Z’s cover for Song Cry was not bad though.

YG showing love

YG  finally came around midnight. Wearing a red cap, a plaid shirt  (also red) and white knee socks, YG looked like a real LA resident. And like a true Compton fella, the rapper had to insert  motherf******  or bitch in each of his sentences.  After a warm welcome from the crowd, YG performed his best hits to date like BPTBitches Ain’t  S*** and My N**** .
Having played My Krazy Life  for several weeks now, I was a bit surprised he did not  perform more songs from his latest EP.
Luckily, we got to bounce on  Who Do You Love,  Left, Right  and  the new Blood anthem, Bicken Back being Bool.
But what happened to Toot It And Boot It though?

Between songs, the rapper entertained the fans as he shared a few (gang affiliated) dance steps and even got a brief twerking session from a female fan. She didn’t show him the goods but he got something else instead. Check the video below.

Mula Grade : 8/10. The energy YG brought on stage definitely compensated for his short performance. YG definitely showed us the good part of his crazy life.

Tyler, the annoying creative rapper (Concert Tonight)

Before Kanye West called him an innovator artist, Tyler Okonma was just your typical troubled teenager, living in California and raised by a single mother. He’s not even 25 yet and has already established himself  as the cool kid on the block. Five years after the world discovered him with his Bastard album, Tyler The Creator has been collaborating with the best rappers (from Pusha-T to Lil Wayne and The Game) and even received the award for the Best Video from MTV.

If you have sensitive ears though, I’m not sure Tyler’s music nor his crew (Odd Future) will be your cup of tea. You might hear the word bitch or fuck a zillion times if you stop by the Metropolis tonight. Then again, he’s not any different than the rappers we listened too. He’s just being a teenager.
