During my last stay in Brooklyn I met Ray, a self-made hustler turned part-time actor who has big ambitions. After all,  New York IS the city of dreams.

This made-in-Bedstuy series follows a group a young black men and women going through trial and tribulations while living in the cold streets of Brooklyn. Nothing is off topic.  Ray Dollar, who plays Rich speaks on his friendship with director Boom Pacino, hot topics that were never discussed in web series before and why he is not worried about the competition. I guarantee you, Respect Life will have you hooked in a New York minute.

Brooklyn meets Montreal (Event)

Brooklyn reminds me of Montreal. It’s like they have their own pulse. Brooklyn has its painters, actors, musicians, writers and much more hidden or not talent. If it was high school, they would be the two cool kids who always have the newest s*** before everybody else.

I didn’t mention the Brooklyn dancers. I’m not talking about the contemporary dancers from those fancy schmancy New York dance schools. I mean those natural born dancers with no real professional background. Those who dance their life away in Brooklyn’s sometimes sketchy venues. From there emerges well known Dancehall King, Blacka Di Danca. He’s not even 25 yet. While most youngins  his age are saving up for the next pair of Jordans, Blakka has already been in multiple tours all over the world AND appeared in several music videos, like the Twerk it Remix (Busta Rhymes Feat. Nicki Minaj). He even got booked as a back up dancer at the Collie Budz show a few years ago in our city. Pretty impressive.

Then you have Montreal talents. Sure,  dancehall music is more on the low here than in New York’s borough… but it’s there. Take female dancer Sephora aka Phopho The Dancer for example. For a few years now, the ex-member of deceased dance group ”Deadly Alliance” managed to appear in a few  videos of local artists, book a few dancehall parties, teach dance classes and release promo or non-promo dance videos (you can check them out on her Youtube channel or Facebook page). If you’re familiar with the dancehall/reggae scene in Montreal, then you probably heard of her.

Now, both dancers will gladly teach us a couple moves this weekend, in downtown Montreal. Don’t worry, you don’t have to be a top dancer to attend. If you like the art of dance of just a fan of dancehall-reggae-soca music, you will definitely have a good time.  If you’re still hesitating, check out the videos below!

Now meet the best of both cities worlds.

Jay Z: Concert Review (Jan 24th 2014 at Bell Centre)

As usual, I was rushing my big sister (concert buddy) to arrive at the Bell Centre early so we would avoid waiting in line. Of course, on our way to gate 121, we’ve decided to stop for drinks. A few awkward stares (my old crush with his new girl) later, we still didn’t get our cold drinks.
Then, we heard it. This old familiar raspy but recognizable tone of voice. Sean Carter had taken the stage.  A few of us still waiting in line ran throughout the black alleys, completely forgetting about our drinks.
HOV opened the show with ”Public Service Announcement”. Dressed in all black with a matching fitted cap and rocking gold chains, Jay Z didn’t really age.

The decor was a bit creepy. During the first part, two humongous eyeballs were literally staring at us on two large screens.  There were also clips of repetitive images (video cameras staring at us or a building crashing down). Can’t forget those glaring illuminati lights who all gave us a hard time taking pictures. An epileptic’s worst nightmare.

The 44 year old rapper didn’t waste any time by performing the latest hits from his last effort ”Magna Carta Holy Grail’. The young fans were rapping on Tom Ford  AND even sang the whole chorus of ”Holy Grail”  (Feat. Justin Timberlake).

Then came my favorite part: the old Jay Z songs. The playlist was refreshing and brought back a lot good memories (circa 1999-2000). We went nuts when we heard ”Dead President” and ”Izzo (H.O.V.A.)”Hard to believe that ”Reasonable Doubt”  was released in 1996. Which is the year my little sister (who was also there) was born.
Jay Z is one of the last rappers of his decade who stays relevant, even after his 10+ year career.  While the his new fan base know him as the ”rapper married to Beyoncé” he’s a rap mogul, a business man and a retired dope boy from Marcy Projects, Brooklyn, New York.

It’s Hovy Baby !
